Chapter 39: Refusal
Chapter 39: Refusal
The Hollywood film model is producer-centric, so the demand for directors is not actually that great.
Unless you're a big-name director like Cameron or Nolan, normally anyone with solid basic skills can handle the job.
After Gu Qing argued her case, David's expression softened slightly. He then insisted on getting the company's approval and hurriedly left.
The financial crisis has not yet erupted, and these independent production companies are well-off; they can easily afford an investment of over ten million.
It was just a common trick, but Gu Qing wasn't fooled at all.
Judging from their attitude, it seems unlikely that they will agree to his conditions.
He was just saying it casually before; let alone New Line Cinema or Focus Media, no production company would allow a Chinese person to be the chief director.
When David the Bearded said he was going back to hold a meeting to discuss it, he was most likely just putting on a show for him.
Leaving the conference room, Gu Qing felt quite disappointed. Compared to the smooth sailing he had experienced in China, the treatment he received here was more like what a normal newcomer should be treated.
Life is never smooth sailing; ups and downs are the norm.
Gu Qing comforted herself and cheered herself up.
The script for "Source Code" is excellent, and he registered the copyright with the Writers Guild early on.
If he's not allowed to film it, he won't give out the script either. At worst, he'll wait a couple of years, wait for a financial crisis, and then acquire one or two film and television companies.
Having made up her mind, Gu Qing felt much better. Humming a little tune, she prepared to leave.
But to his surprise, a slightly familiar voice called out to him.
"Qing-ge? What are you doing here!"
In the lobby lounge area, Jing Tian was sitting on the sofa, looking at Gu Qing with a surprised expression.
Was I hallucinating? I rubbed my eyes. I wasn't mistaken, it was Gu Qing.
"Sweetie? What are you doing here?"
Gu Qing was genuinely surprised. Seeing the other person running over excitedly, the bitterness in her heart dissipated considerably.
The probability of reuniting with an acquaintance in a foreign country is never zero.
"Oh, you said before that we might meet again, and you actually came true."
Jing Tian came to Gu Qing's side, her expression cheerful and her face full of joy.
The strange light in his eyes grew stronger, and his heart was filled with turmoil.
Seventeen or eighteen-year-old girls naturally have some artistic flair.
It's easy to overthink things after such a miraculous encounter.
"Oh, I just arrived a couple of days ago. Didn't you say you were here for tourism? What are you doing here?"
"Did you come alone? You must have come with President Lu."
Gu Qing, hands in his pockets, suppressed his emotions and asked.
"You haven't even answered my question yet, and so many questions have already popped up."
"Let's talk about it after Uncle Lu comes out."
Jing Tian put her hands behind her back and raised her chin as she spoke.
Not long after, Lu Zheng came out alone, and was stunned when he saw Gu Qing next to Jing Tian.
Inside a Chinese restaurant, the three of them ordered lunch and chatted as they ate.
"You mean you have a script and want to direct it yourself?"
Lu Zheng took a sip of water, and his gaze towards Gu Qing relaxed considerably.
He knew it! How could this kid possibly have chased him all the way to North America?
However, Gu Qing's words made him take a few more glances.
What's going on in this kid's head? He just finished making a movie in China, and without saying a word, he's already in Hollywood to show off his skills.
Young people certainly have a lot of energy.
However, that's giving Gu Qing too much credit. He didn't have much to worry about with "Cruise of Destiny" itself. All the big and small matters of the crew were handed over to Chen Ze. He only needed to focus on controlling the quality of the plot.
Moreover, Hollywood doesn't actually prepare for film production very quickly; sometimes the pre-production work can take up to half a year.
"Hmph, if they won't let my Qing-ge be the director, I think Lionsgate's people are nothing special. They're really blind."
Before Gu Qing could say anything, Jing Tian had already started speaking up for her older brother.
"That's normal, actually. No company would let a newcomer direct a project with an investment of 15 million."
Gu Qing smiled and couldn't help but glance at Jing Tian.
It's his own brother who cares about him the most. He's so blind. He really wishes he could have a three-year term. No, it shouldn't even take three years.
"Could I take a look at your script?"
"sure."
Gu Qing handed the script from his backpack to Lu Zheng, who then chatted with Jing Tian for a while.
This girl, whom he hadn't seen for just over a month, was like a lark, talking nonstop, and Gu Qing was happy to be a listener.
They either went to a luxury store or an amusement park.
Although it's not quite like Grandma Liu visiting the Grand View Garden, the gap between China and this place in 07 was indeed quite large.
Laptops and smartphones broadened her horizons.
"Gu Qing, I've invested in your movie. How much do you need?"
Lu Zheng closed the script in his hand, his eyes filled with shock as he looked at Gu Qing.
Although he doesn't have much film appreciation skills, he can see a similar yet different flavor in this script to "Triangle".
"Mr. Lu, to be honest, I personally prefer to film here."
"Oh, okay then. If you change your mind later, you can contact me."
Lu Zheng looked somewhat embarrassed; those words made him feel a little ashamed.
He had been searching for several days, but still couldn't find a suitable production team for Jing Tian.
Gu Qing's words undoubtedly implied that he was not strong enough and would not be considered.
In Hollywood, money alone isn't enough to make movies.
The meal wasn't very pleasant, but Gu Qing and Jing Tian had a very enjoyable chat.
Back in the villa, Lu Zheng looked indignant.
"This kid really doesn't give me any face at all."
"No way, I think Qing-ge is right. Being able to make movies in Hollywood is much better than in China."
Jing Tian smiled and said with a grin.
Unlike later years, the market value of tens of billions of dollars annually makes it undoubtedly the world's largest box office market, and actors and directors alike are scrambling to get in.
It's perfectly normal to come here and try your luck if you have a good script.
"Uncle Lu, if it really doesn't work out, then forget it. There's no need for you to join the film crew."
"With Brother Qing's help, we might just be able to break in."
Jing Tian clenched her fist, as if to cheer herself up.
The setbacks she's faced these past few days have only fueled her determination. She's determined to study acting hard and break into Hollywood!
Actually, she was just saying that; she knows her own abilities. Even if she's just a pretty face in Hollywood, her acting skills are top-notch.
Later, Jing Tian entered Hollywood, but it was only after Wanda Group entered the scene that she finally had some resources, namely "The Great Wall".
Lu Zheng shook his head and smiled bitterly, not knowing what to say for a moment.
In Jing Tian's heart, he was actually inferior to a young, blond-haired boy he had only recently met, which made him extremely uncomfortable.
If he can't get a movie or music album endorsement, surely he can find a product endorsement?
