Chapter 101: My sister could never be a brother-complex!
Chapter 101: My sister could never be a brother-complex!
A campfire was lit on the deck.
The orange-red flames illuminated the night sky, and sparks drifted away on the sea breeze like a swarm of lost fireflies. The skewers of meat on the grill sizzled and glistened with oil, their aroma carried far and wide by the sea breeze.
Gu Ziyue squatted in front of the grill, using the tip of her tail to curl a metal skewer, proudly turning her masterpiece over and over. Feng Ling Shuang, on the other hand, sat upright, holding a skewer of reasonably presentable chicken wings, her expression as serious as still water.
Xiao Bai busied himself handing out condiments to everyone, a satisfied smile on his face. Yin Lingsu leaned against the gunwale, one leg dangling from it, grilling meat in one hand and a gourd of wine in the other, eating with gusto.
"Young Master! This skewer is ready!" Xiao Bai held up a skewer of golden, glistening meat.
"Let me try it." Dong Mo took the skewer of meat, took a bite, and his eyes lit up immediately. "Xiao Bai, your cooking skills are good enough to open a restaurant!"
Xiao Bai's cheeks flushed, and she lowered her head, twisting her fingers: "I'm glad you like it, young master..."
"Dong Mo! Help me grill the meat!" Gu Ziyue poked her head out from behind the grill, her face covered in charcoal ash. "That Feng Ling Shuang guy is like a charcoal seller, everything he grills is covered in charcoal!"
Feng Ling Shuang's face instantly flushed red: "How dare you say that to me? What you roasted is no different from eating raw meat and drinking blood!"
"What did you say?!"
"I'm talking about you!"
Dong Mo sighed, resignedly walked to the grill, and took a skewer from each of the two men.
Behind him, on the lookout tower of the spirit boat.
Dong Yueying sat alone on the edge of the observation deck, hugging her knees and looking down at the warm campfire. Moonlight streamed through the gaps in the clouds, casting a silvery glow on her slender shoulders.
Laughter drifted up on the sea breeze, and although it was a distance away and not very clear, you could still feel the lively atmosphere.
She watched Dong Mo being frantically flipped and roasted by Gu Ziyue and Feng Ling Shuang, watched Xiao Bai covering his mouth and chuckling to himself, and watched Yin Ling Su drunkenly singing while holding up a gourd of wine.
The light from the campfire reflected in Dong Yueying's red eyes, like two distant stars.
Suddenly, a pair of boots appeared on the deck beside her.
"Yueying, are you really not going to eat anything?"
Dong Mo's voice came from above.
Dong Yueying looked up and saw Dong Mo holding a full plate of grilled skewers in one hand, leaning on the railing of the observation deck with the other, looking down at her. The oil from the skewers glistened in the moonlight, and their aroma wafted into her nostrils on the evening breeze.
Dong Yueying didn't say anything, but simply buried her face in her knees.
Dong Mo didn't mind and sat down next to her, placing the plate between them. The residual heat of the charcoal made the skewers sizzle slightly, and the oil dripped onto the iron plate, splashing up tiny sparks.
Moonlight streamed in through the skylight. The two sat side by side, neither speaking.
a long time.
Why?
Dong Yueying finally spoke. She brushed aside her wind-blown black hair, her red eyes fixed on the shattered moon's reflection on the sea, her voice as soft as a sigh in the wind.
Why did you deliberately lose to me?
Dong Mo was taken aback for a moment before realizing that she was referring to the previous competition.
"You noticed?"
"It's so clumsy, it's hard not to notice, isn't it?"
"Well, how should I put it..." Dong Mo looked up at the bright moon, the firelight dancing in his dark pupils, a faint smile on his lips, "Because you're my sister."
"what?"
Dong Yueying turned her head sharply and glared at him.
Dong Mo only gave a bitter smile.
"Because you're my sister. As an older brother, it would be really rude of me to be too serious about my sister."
Dong Yueying was stunned. She stared blankly at Dong Mo, at his profile, and suddenly realized that this was the first time she had ever met this older brother.
Adopted daughter. In the Dong family, only those who have experienced it truly understand what those two words mean. She put in so much effort and suffered so much, yet she still couldn't gain the Dong family's true recognition.
The way the direct descendants looked at her always carried a hint of disdain. The elders' evaluation of her was always, "She's quite hardworking."
She thought that Dong Mo, after leaving the Dong family, would treat her like those other people, as a lackey of the Dong family, or a spy sent by the enemy.
In the end, only her brother, whom she looked down upon the most, treated her as a true family member.
But all of this came too late.
Dong Yueying buried her face in her knees and spoke in a muffled voice, her voice somewhat hoarse.
"Idiot. Don't you think it's too late to say all this now? You've already left the Dong family and are no longer my brother."
"It's not too late."
Dong Mo's voice was light and natural, as if he were talking about something very ordinary.
"Kicking me out of the Dong family was a family decision. In my heart, you're still my sister. As long as you still consider me your brother, you can come to me anytime you encounter difficulties. My door is always open for you."
The wind blew across the observation deck, carrying his words into the night sky.
Dong Yueying muttered "idiot" under her breath, her voice slightly nasal. She instinctively turned her head towards Dong Mo, her hair brushing lightly against his shoulder. The movement was so subtle, almost imperceptible.
Like a lone animal on a winter night, it instinctively moves closer to the only source of warmth nearby.
Dong Mo felt a slight touch on his shoulder, and his body stiffened slightly.
[Supreme Bone: I can finally get close to Pigeon!]
A pop-up window for the Supreme Bone suddenly appeared, filled with a dangerous aura that sent chills down Dong Mo's spine.
[Supreme Bone: Sigh... I want to crawl into Pigeon's body... I want to become one with Pigeon... Pigeon smells so good... Sigh...]
Dong Mo's face instantly turned green. He had finally managed to escape his villainous fate, and he couldn't let this bastard ruin it!
Thinking of this, Dong Mo almost reflexively dodged to the side, using his arm to block Dong Yueying's head from leaning in.
"Uh... well, the grilled meat's getting cold! I'll go get you some seasoning!"
Dong Mo stood up in a flustered manner, his movements so fast he almost knocked over the baking tray.
Dong Yueying stumbled from the push, looked up blankly, and saw that Dong Mo had already retreated three steps away, his expression as if he had seen a ghost.
[Supreme Bone: As expected of Pigeon, even the way she pushes someone away is so charming...]
"Shut up! You worthless piece of trash!" Dong Mo roared inwardly.
"Dong Mo!!!"
Suddenly, Gu Ziyue's powerful roar echoed from the deck.
"Come help me grill the meat! Feng Ling Shuang has burned three more skewers!"
"How dare you say that to me? The skewers you grilled were still raw inside!" Feng Ling Shuang's voice followed closely behind.
Dong Mo felt as if he had been granted a pardon and immediately turned and ran towards the deck.
"Coming, coming! Don't move! Let me handle this!"
Dong Mo's figure disappeared at the end of the steps of the observation deck, leaving only a series of hurried footsteps.
Dong Yueying sat alone on the observation deck, watching the figure running faster than a rabbit.
Moonlight fell on her thin shoulders. She hugged her knees, rested her chin on them, and her red eyes followed the flustered figure by the campfire.
Gu Ziyue was chasing Feng Lingshuang with a burnt chicken wing, who dodged and weaved around the fire. Dong Mo was sandwiched between the two, blocking one with each hand, his face clearly saying, "Why do I have to suffer like this?" Xiao Bai was laughing so hard he couldn't stand up straight, while Yin Lingsu drunkenly banged on her wine gourd to keep them entertained.
As Dong Yueying watched this scene, the corners of her mouth unconsciously turned up slightly.
But then, as if realizing something, she quickly suppressed her smile.
"As expected... Dong Mo is still as unreliable as ever."
